AUDIO & HEADPHONES

Travel headphones and earbuds change a long journey more than any other piece of kit. At Around the World in a Rush, this part of the Travel Tech collection covers wireless earbuds, over-ear headphones and packable speakers.

Cabin noise, a snoring dorm, a station announcement every ninety seconds — the right pair turns all of that down. Earbuds win on packability and are easier to sleep in; over-ear headphones win on comfort over a nine-hour flight and usually on battery life.

Bring a power bank so they survive the return leg, and a tech organizer so the case is not rattling loose in your bag.

FAQ

Earbuds or over-ear headphones for flying?
Over-ear headphones are usually more comfortable across a long flight and block more low-frequency cabin noise. Earbuds pack smaller, are easier to sleep in on a shoulder, and are less to carry once you land. Many long-haul travellers take earbuds and accept the trade.
Can I use wireless headphones on a plane?
Bluetooth is permitted on most airlines once the aircraft is airborne and often from gate to gate, but crew may ask you to remove headphones during safety briefings, take-off and landing. If you want the seat-back entertainment, check whether your set supports a wired adapter.
Do I need noise cancelling?
For frequent flyers it is the single biggest comfort upgrade. For occasional trips, a well-sealing pair that passively blocks noise gets you most of the way at a much lower price.
