Peak fall foliage 2026 is already underway in the far north, and the next five weeks will decide whether your trip lands on a blaze of red or a hillside of brown. As of September 25, the high country of Vermont, New York and Colorado is lighting up first, while the Southern Appalachians will not hit their stride until late October.
This guide breaks down when leaves will peak by region this year, why drought matters more than usual, and how to time and dress for the trip. We cover the big trends in our Fall Travel Trends 2026 post; this one goes deep on the color itself, drawing on the SmokyMountains.com prediction map, state foliage reports, AccuWeather’s seasonal outlook and the U.S. Drought Monitor.
1. The 2026 Fall Color Outlook at a Glance
The short version: the North looks strong, the Rockies and Mid-Atlantic look stressed. In its 2026 fall foliage forecast, AccuWeather said wet weather in late spring and early summer, followed by drier conditions and cooler nights, “could set the stage for vibrant color” in New England and upstate New York. It also expects good color in the Midwest and the Cascades, and typical to vibrant foliage in California’s Sierra Nevada where drought and wildfire are limited.
The weaker spots are the Rocky Mountains, the Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas, and the Lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Paul Pastelok said the aspens in Colorado “should not be as spectacular as previous years,” and that the contrast from central and northern Pennsylvania to southeast Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia “will be drastic.”
2. Why Drought Is the Wild Card This Year
Healthy color needs sunny days, cool (not freezing) nights and enough rain over the growing season. The National Park Service notes on its Blue Ridge Parkway fall color page that wet, cloudy or warm weather dulls the show. Add drought on top, and trees can shed their leaves before they ever color up.
That is why the latest U.S. Drought Monitor data matters. As of September 22, 2026, 59.24% of the Lower 48 was in drought, and 42 states had at least moderate drought somewhere. Drought expanded again in the Southern Plains, the Lower Mississippi River Basin and the Southeast, while it improved in the West and the northern and central Plains. AccuWeather also warned that stressed trees from Georgia to New Jersey and in the Rockies could drop leaves early.
What this means for you: in drought-hit areas, aim for the early side of the normal window rather than the late side.
3. Week-by-Week Peak Fall Foliage 2026 Calendar
The SmokyMountains.com fall foliage prediction map is built on historical data and NOAA forecasts. Here is how AFAR summarized the 2026 map:
- Week of September 29: parts of Washington, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Northeast.
- Week of October 6: Michigan, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts, plus early color in California, Arizona and New Mexico.
- Week of October 13: the Hudson River Valley, the Catskills and western North Carolina.
- Week of October 20: western North Carolina, while many northern areas are past peak.
- Week of October 27: Sonoma County, California, where the grapevines turn.
Treat these as a starting point, then confirm with a state report the week you travel.
4. New England and New York: Right on Cue
The Northeast is the region to watch right now. Vermont Tourism’s September 23 report said the Northeast Kingdom was approaching peak, with color spreading through the Green Mountains and brilliant reds emerging in the Okemo Valley. VTDigger reported on September 24 that cold September nights were accelerating color at higher elevations, with near-peak conditions expected across the Green Mountains within about a week.
NewEngland.com foliage forecaster Jim Salge, a former Mount Washington Observatory meteorologist, expects a slow start that could set up a long season, with northern New England turning first and southern New England possibly delayed. He described the forest’s recovery from the 2025 drought as “about as good as we could have hoped for.”
In New York, the I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report relies on more than 100 volunteer leaf spotters and updates every Wednesday. Executive director Ross Levi told Spectrum News, “We have the longest foliage season of any state in the nation.”
5. The Rockies and the West: Go Early
Colorado’s aspens are running ahead of schedule. Rocky Mountain PBS reported on September 18 that color was peaking about a week earlier than normal after the state’s hottest June-to-August on record, and Western Colorado University professor Jonathan Coop warned that many aspens were going “directly from green to brown.”
It is not all bad news. Crested Butte’s September 25 update said recent rains had slowed the change and widened the window, with leaf-peeping expected “well into October.” Kebler Pass was still rated “Just Starting.” Further west, AccuWeather expects the Sierra Nevada to peak in mid-to-late October, while the interior Northwest may underperform because of long-term drought.
6. The Great Lakes and Midwest
AccuWeather lists the Great Lakes and northern Plains as on schedule this year, with the Ohio Valley possibly delayed by warmth. In Michigan, Axios Detroit, citing Pure Michigan’s 2026 map, puts the Upper Peninsula from mid-September onward, the northern Lower Peninsula around October 19 to 24 and Metro Detroit at the end of October. That staggered pattern makes Michigan one of the easiest states to hit at peak: just drive north or south to find it.
7. The Appalachians and Southeast: Late October
The mountains of Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee peak later and last longer thanks to big elevation changes. The National Park Service says Great Smoky Mountains color arrives above 4,000 feet from mid-September to early or mid-October and at lower elevations from mid-October to early November. Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge recommends October 24 to November 7, 2026 as its best overall window, but noted September ran warmer and drier than typical.
Given the drought expansion in the Southeast, favor higher elevations this year, where trees tend to turn first.
8. How to Time Your Trip
In most places the peak fall foliage 2026 window lasts only a week or two, so a little strategy goes a long way:
- Pick a region, then a week. Use the calendar above to shortlist, then watch that state’s weekly report.
- Use elevation as insurance. If the valley is still green, drive up; if the summit is bare, drive down.
- Book refundable. Peak can shift by a week either way, so flexible lodging keeps your options open.
- Watch the wind. SUNY ESF professor Don Leopold told Spectrum News that color should be outstanding “if there’s relatively few prolonged rain events, prolonged wind events.”
- Go midweek or at sunrise. October is the busiest month at parks like the Smokies.
9. What to Wear for Leaf-Peeping
Foliage weather is layering weather: cold at the overlook at dawn, mild by afternoon, and chilly again the moment the sun drops behind the ridge. Start with a breathable tee, add a heavyweight hoodie you can tie around your waist, and keep a light shell in the car for rain.
A hoodie is the single most useful piece you can pack, and our premium travel hoodies are made to handle long drives, windy summits and every photo in between. Finish with a cap or beanie from our premium hats collection to keep the sun out of your eyes on bright afternoons and your ears warm on frosty mornings.
