Solo travel trends 2026 point to one clear shift: traveling alone is no longer the backup plan, it is the plan. More Americans than ever have booked a trip for one, and the reasons have less to do with having no one to go with and more to do with freedom, growth and meeting new people on your own terms.
The numbers back it up. TravelBoom’s 2026 Leisure Travel Study found that 59% of US leisure travelers have taken a solo trip in the past five years, up from 46% a year earlier. Grand View Research values the global solo travel market at $549.8 billion in 2025, and Hostelworld’s latest survey of more than 3,300 solo travelers shows what they actually want from the road. Here are the eight solo travel trends 2026 is defined by, and what each one means for your next trip.
1. Solo Travel Goes Mainstream
The biggest of the solo travel trends 2026 has produced is scale. In its 2026 Leisure Travel Trends Study, TravelBoom reported that 59% of travelers have taken a solo trip in the past five years, compared with 46% in the 2025 edition. That is a 13-point jump in a single year.
Millennials are leading the charge, accounting for 52% of solo trips taken in the study. TravelBoom points to freedom, mindfulness, niche interests and personal growth as the motivations behind the shift, not a lack of travel companions.
What this means for you: If you have been waiting for a friend’s calendar to line up, stop. Going alone is now one of the most common ways Americans travel, and hotels, tours and apps are adapting to you.
2. A Half-Trillion-Dollar Market That Keeps Growing
Solo travel is also big business. Grand View Research estimates the global solo travel market at $549.8 billion in 2025, rising to $627.3 billion in 2026 and a projected $1.62 trillion by 2033. That works out to a compound annual growth rate of 14.6% between 2026 and 2033.
The same report finds that domestic trips made up 64.7% of solo travel revenue in 2025, and online travel agencies handled 53.8% of bookings. In other words, most solo trips start close to home and get booked on a phone.
What this means for you: More competition for solo travelers means more single-friendly rooms, small-group tours and solo pricing. Compare options before accepting a steep single supplement.
3. Women Are Leading the Way
Women are the engine of the solo travel boom. Grand View Research puts the female share of solo travel revenue at 54.6%, and 60% of the travelers in Hostelworld’s 2025 State of Solo Travel survey identified as female.
Women also report bigger personal payoffs. In the Hostelworld survey, 60% of women said solo travel pushed them out of their comfort zone, compared with 43% of men, and 55% of women valued the time for self-discovery, versus 39% of men. Nearly half of women (47%) said a solo trip gave them a mental refresh.
That sense of momentum is why so many solo travelers like to wear their intentions. Our motivational travel hoodies are made for exactly this kind of trip: a warm layer for a chilly departure gate with a message that reminds you why you booked the ticket in the first place.
4. Solo Does Not Mean Alone
One of the most surprising solo travel trends 2026 highlights is how social it has become. Hostelworld’s State of Solo Travel report found that 71% of solo travelers are actively looking to meet people, and 58% named meeting new people as one of the things they value most about traveling alone.
It works, too. Only 3.7% of travelers who wanted to meet people said they met no one, and 52% stay in touch with people they met on the road.
What this means for you: Choose places built for connection, such as social hostels, walking tours, cooking classes and group day trips. You get the freedom of solo travel with company whenever you want it.
5. Culture and Food Come First
Solo travelers are not chasing checklists as much as experiences. In the Hostelworld survey, 59% said connecting with other cultures was a reason to travel alone, and 54% were seeking unique experiences or adventure.
When asked what they prioritize on a trip, 42% chose food and culinary experiences, 40% chose cultural immersion and 31% chose festivals and local events. Only 31% said ticking off bucket-list sights was a priority.
What this means for you: Build your itinerary around a market, a food tour or a local festival instead of a list of landmarks. Traveling solo makes it easier to say yes to the invitation that comes up on the day.
6. Where Solo Travelers Are Going
Hostelworld’s booking data from the second half of 2024 and the first half of 2025 shows the top solo travel destinations were Thailand, Spain, Italy, Vietnam and Australia. Japan topped the bucket list of places solo travelers most want to visit next.
Southern Europe stands out on every measure. Survey respondents ranked Spain, Portugal and Italy as the safest and friendliest destinations, while Spain, Portugal and Vietnam won for best value. Closer to home, remember that most solo spending is domestic, so a long weekend in a walkable US city counts too.
What this means for you: For a first solo trip abroad, Spain or Portugal offer a strong mix of safety, value and friendliness. If you want a bigger adventure, Japan and Vietnam are where the next wave is heading.
7. Last-Minute, Multi-Stop and Packed Light
Solo travelers book and move differently. Hostelworld found that 35% are last-minute bookers and 44% visit more than one country on a trip. 54% prefer trains, buses and ferries over flying between stops, and 49% make a point of traveling light.
Technology is part of the plan as well. 32% use AI to research destinations and 27% to plan itineraries, although 39% say they never use AI for travel.
Moving between cities on your own is much easier when everything you need fits on your shoulder. A durable, carry-on friendly bag from our premium travel bags collection keeps you mobile, and our guide on how to pack a carry-on shows how to fit a multi-stop trip into one bag.
8. Safety Is the Top Concern, and It Is Solvable
Solo travel still comes with worries. In the Hostelworld survey, 41% of solo travelers named safety as a concern, including 55% of women and 18% of men. Budget worries (33%), loneliness (28%) and getting sick (28%) followed.
Yet confidence is high. Fewer than 2% said they lacked the confidence to travel solo, and 63% of first-time solo travelers plan to take another trip. Most concerns ease with preparation: share your itinerary with someone at home, choose well-reviewed stays in central areas, keep a digital copy of your documents and buy travel insurance before you go.
What this means for you: Treat safety as part of planning, not a reason to stay home. A little preparation lets you relax and enjoy the freedom you came for.
